The post What Kind of Vacuum Should I Buy? was first seen on Friendly Cleaning Services
I get asked this one almost every single day. Aside from hiring a professional carpet cleaning service, regular vacuuming is critical when it comes to maintaining your carpet. Here are my general recommendations for vacuum cleaners: Get one you will use! That may sound weird to say but if you think Kirby vacuums are too heavy then it makes no difference how much suction it has or how well it agitates your carpet or filters the air if you never use it. A vacuum does you absolutely no good siting in your hall closet gathering dust. Next I recommend you get one with a detachable hose so you can vacuum your stairs if you have them, and so you can vacuum your furniture and mattress’. I’ll get into mattress care in a future post…. Which is better — a vacuum with a bag or a bagless vacuum?“Neither is better. The Good Housekeeping Institute tests show that both clean equally well. Which you buy depends on personal preference. Bagless cleaners save you the trouble of having to buy extra bags, but they can be messy to empty, and the filters and dust containers must be kept clean. While vacuums with bags keep dust and dirt contained, they are tricky to retrieve an earring or small object that gets sucked up accidentally.” From the post Buying a Vacuum Cleaner Personally I like to be able to see how much dirt I’m recovering from the carpet so I know how often I need to dump the dirt receptacle. So generally I like to see people with a vacuum cleaner that has a clear dirt cup for easier monitoring. Central Vacuum Systems“Central vacuum systems are designed to remove all the dirt and debris from your house and send it through tubing located in the walls to a receptacle in an out-of-the-way location like a garage or basement. With central vacuums, you only carry a lightweight hose and power brush unit around the house. The power unit is permanent and out of the way.” From the article How Central Vacuum Systems Work Central vacs are a love or hate thing. If you’ve never had one and are considering getting one for your home, I would highly recommend “test driving” one. Maybe a friend, neighbor or family member will give you the privilege of letting you vacuum their carpet. They can be rather pricey and if you end up hating it that will just be annoying for you. The real downfall I see with central vacuums is when some one sucks up something that’s just way too big and it gets caught in the piping of the system. One memorable job was one I did where the teenage son had vacuumed maybe 20 lbs of tooth picks and they got lodged in a turn in the plumbing. Yeah it was a mess. I just sucked them all out with my truck mounted carpet cleaner. Now I have said all that to say this, I have literally cleaned for hundreds of people with Dyson vacuums and have never had a single person say that once they got over the sticker shock they didnt love their vacuum.
